A retrospective exhibition by Fine Artist Martina Furlong

Tate Guerin Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of “Fusion” a Retrospective exhibition of Paintings by London based artist Martina Furlong on Thursday February 5th at 6m. Since graduating in 1996 from the Limerick School of Art, with a BA (Hons) In Fine Art, this Wexford born Artist moved to London to pursue her career and bolster her place in the world of Visual and Contemporary Art. During her years in London Martina has exhibited extensively at Solo and Group Shows throughout the city amassing a significant number of collectors of her work.  “Tate Guerin Gallery at Wells House are fortunate to be able to offer Martina a space for her Retrospective Exhibition in her home county and wish her every success with the show.”

“Fusion” is a mixture of her landscapes and abstract work in oil and acrylic. Her aim with both subjects is to transform reality, mix it with memories and imagination and paint her interpretation of it.

The landscapes are scenes from the Galbally area where she grew up and of Hook lighthouse, a subject she paints often. She exaggerates colour, applies layer upon layer of paint and then works back into the surface using cloths, scrapers, stones, plastic knives and pallet knives as well as brushes to create textured mysterious scenes which capture the beauty, ruggedness and magical qualities she sees in the Irish landscape She uses the same techniques to create a sense of mystery in her abstract paintings. The ideas for these paintings come from sketches of building sites.  These spaces filled with abstract forms and lines draw the viewer in, invite them to experience the scene and to interpret it in their own way. The exhibition will run until March 22nd

Tate Guerin Gallery Set within the grounds of Wells House & Gardens, is dedicated to showcasing Visual Artists who exhibit excellence and remarkable talent.

                                                                                     CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
                                                                                     Lions Club  Open Exhibition

Wexford Lions Club in partnership with Wexford Arts Centre, are delighted to announce application details for its annual exhibition and to invite submissions from local artists and anyone with an interest in art regardless of their level of skill or previous experience.

The annual Lions Club exhibition celebrates local talent and offers a platform for artists who are at various stages of their careers as well as those with an interest in art and who wish to see their work realised within a gallery context. For this reason, it is an important show within the Wexford Arts Centre’s programme. The Wexford Lions Club Open Exhibition will be on view in the lower and upper galleries of Wexford Arts Centre from Saturday 14 March until Saturday 4 April 2015.

Building on the success of last year’s exhibition and the remarkably high quality of work received, the theme for the 2015 exhibition has again been left entirely open. Participants can submit work on a variety of subjects ranging from land to sea, figure and fauna, rural beauty, urban narratives, pure imagination, total abstraction and everything else in between.

Also, this year we will again feature the Young Lions gallery, dedicated exclusively to the work of young, budding artists. We also wish to promote the talents of local sculptors and those working in three dimensional forms, requesting that these too participate so that we may produce an exhibition which truly encompasses the diverse nature of visual art and the array of talent found within Wexford and its surrounding areas. Taking into consideration the time needed to produce sculpture particularly when working with materials such as metal, wood and ceramics, we request sculptors enter work produced over the past 3-5 months and only submit new works not previously shown in a gallery context.

Interested persons are asked to complete an application form and collect a cartridge/watercolour paper or canvas from Wexford Arts Centre. If artists are interested in submitting 3D works, they must also fill out an application form but should note that the work must be no larger than 35(w) x 35(l) x 50(h) cms. Applications are limited to one per person and as the number of artists participating in the exhibition is limited, applications will be processed on a first come, first served basis.

Application forms and canvases/boards are available now and the deadline for submission of completed work to Wexford Arts Centre is Friday 6 March 2015 . Exhibition entry fee is €10.00 per applicant. All artworks must be submitted unframed on or before this date and on the paper/canvas provided by the Arts Centre.

Wexford Arts Centre & Wexford Lions Club would like to thank Spectrum Art Supply Shop for their ongoing and generous support of this exhibition.

The Rabbit and the Teasel by Els Dietvorst
Saturday 8th November at 2pm

Wexford Arts Centre is delighted to screen a feature-length film by Els Dietvorst, The Rabbit and The Teasel, followed by an ‘in conversation’ session.

In 2010, documentary filmmaker Els Dietvorst moved from Brussels to Duncormick, a village in the Irish countryside to build a new life. Immediately intrigued by what was happening around her, she began to record the everyday lives/survival of her neighbours. This resulted in a series of probing video testimonies, which she wove together into a web documentary entitled The Black Lamb

In the documentary The Black Lamb, the testimonies of JT Butler, (the youngest member of a third generation of cattle dealers) formed the basis of a larger project; The Rabbit and the Teasel.  This feature length film, transforms Butler’s story into a modern day rural drama, in which the raw reality of a year full of rain drives the farmer to despair, or as Butler’s father puts it “even if farmers are as tough as nails, this season is soul destroying.”

The Rabbit and the Teasel weaves fiction and autobiographical elements into a lyrical tale and builds on many anti-utopian themes from Dietvorst’s earlier film work: social conflict and the struggle that is life. She begins with her fascination for outsiders, people whose lives have radically changed course and who end up on the margin. The artist also reflects on her own live, what it means to live/survive far from the comforts of the city.

In the film Dietvorst draws on the collective memory of the local community, and her fellow villagers narrate, film and act. The film was almost entirely shot at Breen Farm in Lough, Duncormick; a house built in 1832 by the Furlong family. Originally an agricultural farm, it was rebuilt as a dairy farm in 1968 by James Bridie Breen, and their son John manages Breen Farm today.

For further information on the artist or the film please click here.
